Trash Desktop makes desktop database files visible and automatically moves them to the trash. Doing this forces the Mac OS to rebuild the files when you restart your computer. Desktop database files contain information about your system. When they become corrupt or lose track of data, odd things can occur, such as the loss of custom icons. Apple recommends rebuilding the desktop database once a month, and although you can do this by holding down a key sequence at start-up, the process of completely deleting the database--as Trash Desktop does--is preferred and more reliable.
